When was the last time you ‘gave away’ one of your skills or talents to help another woman? Do you remember how good it felt to make someone else happy in this way? Or lift her up because of something you did well?

What are your gifts or talents?

Well, your innate gifts or talents are what you are not only good at but that you actually enjoy doing. You know what I mean. When you are expressing or sharing one of your talents, you are filled with confidence and joy. And I bet if you are doing something you’re not naturally good at, or at least practiced in, you’re not happy. Our talents are a way for us to BE who we are! And when we lead with these gifts, we may even discover others, dormant inside and waiting.

To help you in discovering your gifts, think about this:

* It comes to you easily. Or you learn it easily. For me, that’s learning languages.

* It gives you strength when you do it. For me, that’s when I help someone discover something new about herself.

* It comes naturally to you. For me, it’s when I am teaching someone something.

* It brings joy to you and others. For me, it’s when I am around children.

* You look forward to doing it. For me, I love connecting with people through letters or email.

* You feel like you’re in your groove when you do it. For me, that’s traveling and meeting people in different places.

* Time is lost when you’re doing it. For me, that’s when I’m cooking for guests.

* Once a talent has been shared, you have immense fulfillment. For me, that’s after I have coached a client.

* You look forward to sharing your talent again. For me, that’s all of the above!

And now, do this little process and notice what happens:

* Write down a list of your gifts and talents, at least 10 things you really do well. Yes, you have ten or more…

* Celebrate that list! This is something special you have to give. Really celebrate your own unique collection of special abilities.

* Imagine the feeling of confidence that expressing your talents brings you.

* Ask yourself who you know, or don’t know but could connect with, to share a talent gift.

* Make a plan to GIFT (serve, give away, help) your talent and uplift another woman.

* :-) Do it!

A talent given away is not only a gift to someone else but a beautiful, intangible gift to yourself. You grow. She grows. And the connection you feel has a ripple effect – more gifts, more connections.

What talents have you given to another? How did you feel? In what ways can we use The Gifting Mosaic to exchange our gifts and connect women globally even more? Please share below.

hand-flowerWe have talked a lot about the different ways we can gift something we have to someone else who could benefit. Remember? We can gift our time or our talent. We can gift physical things, as in items that help someone (canned goods, coats, used digital devices).  And we can gift money, another great way to help someone else or show we care. The hardest item on this list for women is usually ‘talent’. Women say they don’t know what their talents really are.

Now funny enough, friends, family, or even business colleagues can tell us what our talents are, but we demure. Why is that? It can be uncomfortable for a woman to say what she is really good at. Women have been taught messages like, ‘if you talk about yourself and what you’re good at, you’re bragging.  That, of course, is negative. Since we all have talents, to acknowledge our gifts of talent is a wonderful thing. Furthermore, once we acknowledge our talents, we are more likely to share them with the world! And once we see how our talents help others, that silly idea around bragging is gone in a flash.

To help you figure out your special talents, here’s a simple definition. Talent is “special natural ability or aptitude, as in a talent for drawing.” It’s something that comes naturally to you. On the other hand, a skill is something that ‘comes from one’s knowledge, practice, aptitude, etc. to do something well’. Skills are also things we cultivate over our lives and gift to others. It’s nice to think that what we have worked on over many years of practice and hard work can serve other women in an even bigger way. That’s meaningful, and it’s satisfying to look across the spectrum of your life and pluck out your talent or skill gifts and use them as a point of connection and service.

So, I invite you now to write down what you feel you are naturally good at. These are the things you look most forward to doing. As an example, I have always been a connector type, am naturally good at communicating with people and am naturally good at learning languages. It’s a talent I have. I’m not naturally talented at singing, however, and when someone says ‘karaoke’, I cringe!

Now, what are your skills? What have you studied, practiced, focused on, or cultivated through practice and effort? Write down 10 skills you have, just as they pop into your mind. I promise you, you have many talents and skills. If you can’t think of them, call a friend. She or he will definitely be able to help you create your list. Those who know us can so easily see things we don’t acknowledge.

Please create your list – 5 talents, 5 skills. And if that’s easy, write down five more of each. Now review your list and imagine what it would be like to gift these beautiful parts of who you uniquely are to someone else. That is part of what The Gifting Mosaic is about. Stay tuned over the next few months for more information.

How was this exercise? Did it get you to think? Did you need help? Do you feel empowered by all that you bring to the lives of others? Please share below.

Many women have the great combination of big hearts and a big purse to go with it.  Are you one of those fortunate women? Or maybe you have a big heart and an average pocketbook. Even if you have a tiny little purse, and an average sized heart, gifting money to someone else just might change your life.

Because money is an easy way to give to others in need, we write checks. We send them off to organizations that solicit us for money, and we don’t want to say NO. However, from countless conversations I have had with women, I have found we want our money to feel like more than the funds behind the gift. But how do we go about adding that deeper piece to our ‘money gift’?

It’s becoming easier to give financially and feel really great about it at the same time. Many of us see the world truly as a global village and want to commit and connect much more.

So, There are three ways to infuse your gift with a piece of your soul and feel connection, too.

1. Buy gifts for your friends or family that give back to the women who produced them. These gifts include the cooperative where the women work and often include the name or even photo of the woman who made your special item. It might include a tag signed by her, too.

In this way, you give a real monetary gift to the creator of the item – her livelihood is fed by your purchase. Examples of organizations with wonderful connections to women and their crafts are Global Goods Partners, Ten Thousand Villages, Women’s Peace Collection, Global Mamas, and many more.

2. Loan your money to a person through KIVA. This non-profit organization’s mission is to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty and help people help themselves. It’s monetary based, but it’s a loan for someone to create a business, buy a cow or purchase farm supplies, dig a well, etc.

You choose a borrower. You make a loan. You get repaid. If desired, because you felt good and could watch the project in action, you repeat. For more information, go to kiva.org. Watch the video, and for $25 you can make your first loan.

3. Join a group like and gift financially, as this organization says, ‘changing the world, one dinner at a time’. Chapters meet often and share a meal together. They connect and enjoy common interests, and they raise funds for the featured program of the month. The topics improve the lives of women and their families and cover topics such as grass roots programs in education, healthcare, sustainability and leadership.

The clever core of this program is that women eat together in someone’s home and the money they would have spent to go out to eat is then donated to Dining For Women’s cause of the month. For more information go to diningforwomen.org.  Maybe there’s a group already in your town, or consider starting one!

These are just a sampling of the many creative ways you can gift money and connect your heart in meaningful ways to women around the world, and also near home.

Have these ideas for gifting money inspired you? What other ways have you given money that was creative and meaningful? Let’s develop the conversation. Please share below.

heartIf you had $1,000 to give to a woman anywhere, what woman or group would you give to? Where does she live? What are her needs? Why does she (or her group) pull your heartstrings?

When you release your mind and let your heart take the lead, you will learn so much about what fulfills you as a giver. And when you follow your inner compass for giving, your gifts will satisfy in an expanded way.

So, here are a few questions to help you discover your gifting ‘groove’

1. Do you like to develop relationships and personally connect with other women?  If this feels good to you, then you may want to give to someone you can meet locally or who you could connect with online, and they could live across the globe.

For example, I like the fair trade movement and the fact that I can often meet artisans online who make the items in a certain collection. Or read their stories about their lives.

2. Do you like to give one time gifts and then move on to another organization, or do you like to find one cause and commit mostly to that? I know someone who is deeply involved in the cause of stopping human trafficking, and she pours all her spare energy for giving into that. It satisfies her because she feels she can make a bigger difference by focusing on only one need.

If this sounds right for you, and you don’t want to be spread too thin, then listen to what cause grabs your heart most. If, on the other hand, you see yourself as a gifting ‘grazer’, you may have a list of causes that speak to your heart where you’d like to give. That’s me – a bleeding heart for hunger, children, clean water, education, etc.

3. Do you want to make a specific impact with your skills and talent? Would you like to get involved at a grassroots level with a new organization that needs help? Whether you give money or would prefer to invest your time (or both!) is an important conversation to have with yourself.

Feeling the urge to DO something for a cause, you may want to jump in with both feet. For example, a growing organization in my town serves girls at risk, and I know numerous women getting involved. I care about this group, but my heart is pulled elsewhere. So, imagine yourself giving your time and talent to the organization that speaks to you, and then to the level you care to serve. Giving works best when it’s aligned with your available time, talent, and resources, as well as your enthusiasm!

So, what kind of a giver are you? Test it out by giving a gift that aligns with your answers from above. And let’s continue the conversation below.

It was going to be a different Christmas, because my two children were going to visit their Dad in Montana. That meant I was going to be alone. No kids. That rocked me for a month or so. I moaned and groaned. Luckily my world shifted when I decided to focus on other ways my holiday could be memorable, all season long.

kettle-salvationGift One: Since Christmas is about giving, I decided to put something in the Salvation Army bucket every time I passed one. In the weeks before Christmas, my kids and I got in the spirit, and as we dropped money in the pot, we shared a smile and greeting with the bell ringer. Also, we had a little feeling of something more as we entered the stores. And it helped me realize how little I gave compared to how much I bought. As the weeks progressed, I dropped more and more in the little red pots.

Lesson learned – through conscious awareness I became more generous.

lettersGift Two: I believe connections with people are one of my greatest gifts in life. So I did the old fashioned thing, and I wrote Christmas cards to friends and family far away. Each card had a hand written note, and I closed each envelope with a blessing and love for the holiday.

Lesson learned – giving and receiving are tightly woven together in the strands of life. Without these lovely people to remember with each card, I would not have had the flood of happy memories from my past. Those memories expanded me and made me feel very rich this December.

myselfGift Three: I had much time to reflect over the quiet days of Christmas. And I came to a new understanding about myself. Despite the times I have messed up in my life, and there are many, and despite my failures and disappointments, I am a gift. As simple as that, I really settled into this divine truth. I am a gift. I can make powerful change happen in this world because of the gift my life. I am precious. I have been given life to enjoy, to live fully and happily.

Lesson learned – when I see myself as the gift, I value myself so much more. It is not arrogant or cocky. It just is. As it is for you. You are a gift, too. And when we all accept this one thing about ourselves, we begin to change the world.

So, this Christmas, I am grateful for my three gifts. What about you? What three gifts do you hold most dear this holiday season? I would love to hear.

Of all the holidays celebrated the world over, I think there is only one common global holiday — New Year’s Day. It’s not religious or cultural, not historical or military, not motherly or fatherly or for

the children. It simply marks the occasion of 365 more days, counting again from day one. Yet, it’s magical, and the entire planet embarks on the new year at the same time, with fanfare, hope, and in the spirit of possibility.

After the celebration ends….resolution time?

People create and then proceed to break a ‘zillion’ resolutions, including ones about losing weight, saving more money, and being of greater service to others. With so much abundance, this is how we envision a better year ahead. Somewhere on the other side of the world (so to speak), perhaps in a meeker celebration, there could be concerns over having enough food or violence from morning until night.

Their resolutions, if they make them at all, might look quite different, such as wanting this new year to bring them safety while they sleep or fresh water nearby. If only resolutions could be made about things that really matter, like that.

Resolutions, or wishes as a new year begins, have to do with perspective. For those with many blessings, a resolution may look like a ‘nice extra’ in life, or ‘the icing on the cake’ at the beginning of a new year. Resolutions could even be perceived as easy, cheap and fun, tossed around like a quip among friends. And, they often aren’t taken too seriously either, are they?

So, image doing it differently this year. Take a stand for a real ‘life changer’?

I am going to ask you to think deeply on some truly meaningful thoughts. It’s not that your weight doesn’t matter, but what could you imagine, decide on, act on, and deliver inside these next amazing 12 months of your life? What if you could make some serious impact in your life or someone else’s by a decision you make now?

A few suggestions to get you started.

  • Ask yourself what you believe deeply in. Write down what comes to mind. Is there anything on your list that might be common to others? If so, think how you could build a community with similarly minded people and make some noise. By noise, I mean start to make a difference through your belief. You may feel strongly about how greyhound dogs are treated and want to save more of them. Or maybe you have a friend or family member with a physical condition that the world needs to be more aware of. You could work with others to create a fund raiser and awareness movement.
  • Ask yourself what you’re very good at. Record your thoughts. Now, take that list and imagine how you could take your gifts into your community in a new and different way. Who needs your services? Could you reach a new and needy audience by going virtual online?
  • Ask yourself if you have a specific hobby that might uplift or benefit others. Maybe you want to get into something new and teach others about it. Would it benefit their health, well being, or happiness? I have a friend, who I was having this particular conversation with over Christmas break. I asked her what she would really love to do when she’s not at her job. She surprised me by saying she wants to become a tai chi instructor and bring peace to people with stressful lives. Wow. I had no idea, and you know, neither did she until I posed the question and gave her the freedom to think into 2013 in a new way.

There are many more ideas we could all conjure up for making 2013 your best year ever. It’s not too late yet. As a matter of fact, there are still 358 days until the ball drops on 2014!

I’d love to hear from you. How can you see yourself creating a meaningful, rich, and lovely 2013? Imagine and begin to act soon….and we can change the world. No kidding.

The Power Within You

I’ve heard it said that some people live ninety years and others live one year ninety times. The difference is that those living their years to the fullest are living their dreams. We are all capable of living our dream lives when we open ourselves up to possibilities and opportunities.

We have been trained to look at conditions to determine what the opportunities and possibilities are for our lives, though these conditions can be limiting when viewed with just the five senses. When we live outside the standard senses and use intuition, imagination, and perception we are able to more clearly see our heart’s desire and the dreams that will bring us the happiness we yearn. We all have an inner voice but it is not one of reason or logic…it is the voice of guidance. This voice may not make sense to anyone else but it is there to help us recognize and nurture the thoughts that build dreams of our very own.

The underlying principle of dream building is this: The power that is within each of us is greater than anything that is in our surroundings. The power that is within each of us is greater than any circumstance of our life. The power that is within each of us is greater than our history. There are all sorts of things that we can hold as ideas that will keep us from our dreams or, instead, we can use our thoughts in service of dreams instead of thwarting them.

Changing our thoughts to best build our dreams is a two-step process. First, we must release condition-based thinking. If we focus our thoughts on what we don’t want to happen, we bring about those circumstances. For example, if you want to lose weight and concentrate on not eating pizza, then you crave pizza and ultimately give in to it.

The second part of the process is

about the pizza that would thwart your efforts. This is true even if you work in a pizza parlor!

Each of us is the author of our own thoughts. The past or present does not need to dictate the future. Allow yourself to explore the possibilities of your dreams and fill your mind with what you would like to be and do and create and give. Use your inner power to write the future in a way that supports your dreams.

To Your Greatness!

I have a confession for you. I have a favorite movie, which I may have seen 25 times. It’s pretty sappy. Have you seen it? “It’s a Wonderful Life” is a blissful Christmas tradition for me, as meaningful as my trees, my cookies, my Christmas CD’s.

Why do I watch it year after year?

First, I love to escape into the world of goodness and love. It shifts my vibration and my heart.

Second, it’s fun to time travel backward into that family focused, seemingly simpler time in our history, 1946.

Third, I get to remind myself of the loveliness of such core values as family and commitment, connection, and community. Yes, there’s a villain too, who puts us on guard, just like in our lives today.

Here’s the plot.

Jimmy Stewart is the young owner of a small town bank. Every time he intends to leave and explore the world, where his real dreams call him, important interruptions call him back. He makes the best of it, marrying and having children. He keeps the bank afloat during the Depression through one crisis after another. Overwhelmed to a point of utter despair after being accused of mishandling bank funds, he wants to end it all. Clarence, an angel sent by God, arrives to prevent him. When George states, “I wish I’d never been born”, that’s when the movie really takes off. Angel Clarence takes him back through the chapters of his life, where George sees his contribution to others’ lives and starts to believe he matters again.

The messages revolve around money, success, and ultimately the purpose of life.

Point #1: Failure is a relative term, all depending on the reflection of your goals, expectations, and values.

George Bailey thinks he’s a failure and wishes he never was born. When he steps into his life from the perspective of “What if I hadn’t been born at all”, then he is able to see his many contributions to people in his town and family. He is saved by the realization that he did make a difference.

As entrepreneurs, it’s easy to lose sight of this. Real success is in the journey and the lives you touch along the way. Ironically, it’s not much about the goals or dreams you pursue along the way at all.

Point #2: Nothing is really as valuable as our friends and family, who do love and support us when we can’t see our greatness ourselves.

The movie begins with a happy George Bailey. He’s got his wife, kids, a business, and a dream for affordable housing in Bedford Falls. When his life spirals downward in the depression, this is when George wants to end it all.

He loses perspective (that word that can save us or haunt us all by how we apply it in our lives, too) on his blessings as his life gets troubled. He finally gains back appreciation of his life by seeing that his life is already wonderful, warts and all. It was all a matter

Brittle used I weeks online pharmacy of easy classic stuff.

of where he put his focus.

Point #3: Each of us has a life purpose, which we must discover. Sometimes our purpose is divulged through the episodes in our lives that we choose to unravel.

It was clear in the movie that George had struggles. And he asked, “Is this all there is? Why was I born anyway?”

Hitting rock bottom was his catalyst to answering the questions which would save him and put his perspective on his life back on the right course.

Have you ever thought of the almost impossible odds of your arrival into this world?

You’re here. And millions and millions of others aren’t. You have incredible value within you to shine through your business, your family, your heart. Same with George Bailey….

As George finally asked himself, I invite you to ask yourself, “What if I weren’t born?” You will see the ripples of change reverberating through many others’ lives if you extract yourself completely from existence. All your influence, support, help, direction, love, training, business ideas…zip. Gone. Sometimes even the smallest contributions or touches we make in others’ lives, through our business efforts or otherwise, still have profound impact.

Reflect on this for your new year and

the year just ending.

What would be different today if YOU hadn’t been born? And what won’t be the same tomorrow if you don’t step forth and engage your life?

I’d love to hear what you think. Have any of these points struck a chord? How can you, like George, make a move to live more richly?

After all, for all of us, isn’t it a wonderful life?
